Cute and Easy Card for Father's Day!

June 16, 2020 2 min read

I love giving people cards and sometimes, I want to make one. And when it comes to Father's Day, handmade cards just make sense to me. BUT I'm not really skilled when it comes to drawing or painting so I rely on other things to make cards-- mainly cutting and gluing.

Lately, I've really enjoyed thinking up creative ways to use washi tape because it's just so pretty and I love to buy it. The thing is, if you buy washi tape and never use it, it piles up pretty quickly and becomes a bit overwhelming.

The good news is, washi tape is SUPER easy to use and always looks great. So, I pulled out some washi tape, some cardstock, a glitter pen, scissors, and a glue stick and got to work.

I now present you with a super cute Father's Day card that is actually fun to make instead of stressful.

Cute and Easy Father's Day Card Tutorial

Materials Needed

  • Tie Template
  • Printer
  • Cardstock or blank greeting card
  • Pen or Marker
  • Washi Tape (your choice, more info below)
  • Scissors
  • Glue Stick

Instructions

Right-click the template below to save and print the tie template. If you print as is, it'll fit on a 6" tall card. You can resize it to make it bigger or smaller depending on how you want it to look.

Tie Template

Cut out your template and choose your washi tape. This is where you get to be creative and NOT overthink things. You choose what you want your dad's tie to look like. It can be simple, it can be colorful, it can be fancy, it can be funny. It can be one pattern, or however many you can fit. There's no better or worse, right or wrong, or ideal thing. Just do whatever you want. I chose two patterns of the same thickness. You can do the same or you can mix and match tape widths too. Have fun with it.

Cut out tie template

Take your first washi tape and tape down a strip along the lefthand edge. Use your scissors to cut the tape at the bottom (follow the template) and at the top under the knot.

Laying down washi strips

Keep doing this until the tie is covered. If you're combining patterns, just alternate your tape designs. Once you do this, take another strip of tape and lay it down on the bottom edge of the tie's knot. This is nice because it covers any little tape strips that you might not have gotten as you cut them.

Washi Tie Progress

If you have room, add another strip of tape above it until the knot is covered. Your masterpiece tie is complete!

Complete Tie

Glue down your one of a kind creation to your card and decorate the card as you wish.

Father's Day Card

You can keep it simple and just write "Happy Father's Day", you can doodle or stamp little designs onto it, or you can add stickers. Make it the special little card it is.

Don't forget to write a sweet note inside and cement your spot as Favorite Child one more year.
